EDUCATION AND CULTURAL: UNITED STATES & THE WORLD

One of the great things about watching the Olympics is the opportunity to learn more about other countries and cultures. From doing a world map puzzle or US map puzzle to playing a geography board game, we love being able to use the Olympics as a way to connect where we live to where others live. Macy’s is a great spot to pick up these items and we love that you can order online so you can keep cheering from your couch!

HOCKEY, TEAM USA AND GOLD MEDALIST KENDALL COYNE’S NEW BOOK

Kendall Coyne Schofield is at her third Olympic Games! She won a Silver Medal and is defending the Gold Medal as Team Captain for USA Women’s Ice Hockey. As a girl in a male-dominated sport she shared with us: “I wasn’t born to play hockey, I really just picked up the sport because I wanted to do what my brother was doing at the time. And when I started playing hockey, women’s hockey wasn’t even in the Olympic games. It wasn’t an Olympic sport. So to know where this game would take me is nearly impossible when I started it. But what was possible, and what I did know, was how much I loved the sport, how much passion I had for the sport at even such a young age. And it’s really that love, that passion, that drive, and work ethic that was ingrained in me. Because I love this sport so much, that really helped get me to where I am today.”

Her book, AS FAST AS HER just came out in January and when we caught up with her she talked about the sacrifices of her parents: “In the book, I talk about how my mom was a teller at the racetrack. And then when one became two, and two became four, pretty quickly in terms of kids in the Coyne household, I witnessed my mom give up her career so that we could fulfill ours. And I don’t think there’s any greater sacrifice in that because I know how much she loves working, and how she’s such a workhorse. And she loved being at the racetrack, and around her coworkers.”

When you’re young you don’t really understand it, but she did that so that we could fulfill ours. And then as we start to get older and bills became more expensive and hockey was expensive, I saw her become a cleaning lady, a lunch lady, and doing any odd side jobs that she could to help bring in extra money so that we could continue to play the sport. And same with my dad. He continued his job, but then would do extra jobs along the way. And so when people talk about my work ethic, I had the best leaders and role models right in front of me. And they didn’t even have to say anything. I just had to watch the work that they put in every day so that I could live out my dream and play the sports I loved. And it wasn’t just hockey, I was playing basketball, baseball, softball, track and field, I was doing it all. And to have their work ethic showed me that there’s no reason that I can’t give it my best every time I have the opportunity to go out there and play because they’ve provided that opportunity for me.”

GET INTO THE ACTION (AND ON THE RINK) AT THE FAIRMONT GRAND DEL MAR

Whenever we watch the Olympics, it inspires us to want to try new sports. One of our favorite gems in San Diego is the Fairmont Grand Del Mar. Whether you are looking to make the next Olympic team or just enjoy skating, the Fairmont has an outdoor skating rink. A beloved winter activity, the rink is ecofriendly and allows our guests to enjoy the outdoors even more. Available until the end of February. Tickets are $35 for adults and $15 for children – you can reserve skates with your admission ticket.

We also love that the Fairmont has an amazing outdoor set up with their Social Club. One of the many perks of being located in San Diego in the year-round weather. While many cities become colder and have limited outdoor activities, guests and locals alike can enjoy the fire pits and cabana experiences. From wood fired pizza and drinks to s’mores after skating, we love that we can refuel or those that don’t want to skate can still enjoy the evening from the fire pit. In addition to skating, the Fairmont’s outdoor activities also include family friendly activities such as games and live music. This is a great spot to meet up with family or friends!
