Charlize Theron may have won an Oscar and the admiration of the film community for her work Monster, North Country and more recently Mad Max: Fury Road, but none of those were films her kids could watch. In fact until now the South African beauty didn’t have any films in her repertoire that her kids could watch.

Her son was the catalyst for Theron choosing to voice Monkey is the stop-motion film Kubo and the Two Strings.

She shared, “I was really touched by the story and maybe because it was that I was in this really nurturing place. He was two-and-a-half when I started working on this project and I think all of that made me fall in love with this a little bit more. There wasn’t a moment where I wasn’t working on this where I didn’t think about him… I talked to him about it a lot.”

But the toddler was “hard to impress” even questioning his mom, “Do they now you’re not a monkey?”
