Summer is here and soon enough the kids are going to be saying, “I’m bored. There’s nothing to do.” So rather than get to that point, we wanted to share some fun things you can do together as a family. You can create some fun family memories together and be active.
Escape to the Lake — As the summer heats up, you don’t have to go too far to enjoy water activities. Break away from the beach and escape to the sunny shores of Lake San Marcos. Enjoy a leisurely ride in a kayak, or strike a pose on the stand up paddle board, pedal water bikes or let a captain take you out through the luxury Bennington boat rental. You can also cast away in hopes of reeling in the catch of the day while fishing off the docks.
And not all the fun happens on the lake, there is a concert series through the summer, dining at their restaurant Decoy overlooking the water, or spending the weekend at Lakehouse Hotel and Resort in one of the cottages or family adventure suite. Plus you can’t leave without hitting the links at St. Mark Golf Club, where they have summer camps for kids starting at 6 years old!
Tee Up! You hear all the time about how tennis and golf are life sports, so start your kids young and grab your clubs and get out on a course. We belonged to a country club growing up and it was so fun to get it out and play as a family. But gone are the days where only the members can play, the San Diego area boasts more than 90 golf courses, laid out among seaside settings, desert mountains or the inland valleys. Plus you can easily look the part too. We love Carlsbad-based company, Vessel Golf, because their bags utilize the most advanced strap and stand system to provide you with the best carrying experience on the course. They are lightweight (so any kid could even easily carry them to summer camp or a class) plus the have the option of 6-way or 14-way top, an inner valuables pocket with a two-combination lock, waterproof zippers and 6 external pockets.
Plus the brand is trusted and used by more than 100 PGA and LPA players and many celebrities too! Actor Mark Wahlberg took advantage of the personalization on any bag and got two bags — one with all his movie titles, and the other with all the brands he owns written on the bag. NBA Champion and All-Star from the Golden State Warriors Steph Curry personalized his with his life motto “I can do all things” derived from the verse and PGA player Rickie Fowler did a collaboration with Vessel Golf x Cobra Golf.
So pack up your clubs and whether it’s a day of instruction, driving range fun or full course play with the family, you’re guaranteed to look good on and off the course with these bags “crafted for the driven.”
Go for a ride — Some of my favorite memories growing up were riding bikes with friends around the neighborhood. Whether it is exploring a new trail, cruising along the beach or learning how to ride a bike for the first time, summer time is a great time to take a family bike ride. There are over 20 mountain bike trails in San Diego county alone. It can be fun to pick out a new trail or spot and make a day trip out of it. For us, our boys are just at the beginning stages of learning how to ride a bike. As we were researching first bike options, we came across Prevelo Bikes. We were immediately impressed because while the majority of kids bikes are heavy and clunky, which actually makes learning how to ride a bike more difficult, Prevelo Bikes are made with the type of components you would see on a quality adult bike, like light and strong aluminum alloys and sealed bearings. By being closer to the ground and being lightweight, Prevelo bikes are constructed so they are easier to learn on. There are five sizes ranging from balance bike to 24-inch bikes and nine models.
We love getting to meet the families behind the brands and Prevelo is no exception. It started when Jacob’s oldest son was learning how to ride a bike. Jacob developed an unhealthy obsession with making him confident on the bike. He learned a lot and became the neighborhood dude that people would bring their kids to to learn to ride. Through the process, it became apparent to him that whoever was designing the bulk of the kids bikes being sold in the US didn’t share his obsession. Most kids bikes are heavy, tall and clunky and Jacob wanted to change that. It would have just been a fleeting idea that withered away in his head, but when he told his wife, Sarah about it, she was totally into it and as a result, Prevelo Bikes was started.
Music at the Marina — Whether you prefer Storm Troopers or Wizards with Wands, space travel or time travel, patriotic or the classics… the San Diego Symphony’s Bayside Summer Nights is the perfect choice for the whole family to spend and unparalleled under the stars. It’s the long-running summer concert series located on the Embarcadero Marina Park South and this summer’s lineup is top notch. Kicking off the end of June and holding with tradition, the opening series is the patriotic Star Spangled Pops and the summer season concludes with a bang at the 1812 Tchaikovsky Spectacular on August 30 and 31 and September 1.
A slew of family favorites sprinkled in between including: two nights of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back™ In Concert with John Williams’ unforgettable score performed live to the film, J.K. Rowling’s classic tale Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince™In Concert and two special Comic-Con week concerts inside Copley Symphony Hall, Jacobs Music Center featuring the world premiere of Galaxy Quest™ In Concert and Back To The Future™© In Concert. So pack up your picnic and bring the family. You can enjoy lawn seating or take advantage of the convenient tableside service that’s offered in the Champagne seating section. One thing is certain, it’s one of the most beautiful venues in San Diego.
Cool Down with a Family Movie-There are those days that it might just be too hot or it is raining, or you have done so many activities that you need to take a break. It can be fun to watch a movie together as a family. Each week at the Cinepolis at the Del Mar Highlands they will have a summer Kids series. From Sing to Wizard of Oz and Smallfoot, parents can relax in the reclining chairs while kids enjoy some of their favorite movies. The $6 ticket includes a popcorn, fruit gummies and a small drink! Check your local Cinepolis to see what summer time fun they are doing.
