Memorial Day and the first day of summer are right around the corner which means it’s time to start splishing and splashing in the water. Whether it’s at the beach or summer pool party, we are sharing safety tips, protective fashions, and some fun games to make sure your pool party is unforgettable!
Whether you are having just some family and friends over or the entire neighborhood, we are sharing some fun things to make sure your pool party is a hit!
We love mommy and me matching, and a pool party is no exception. When we were younger we wore way less swimsuit and sprayed oil all over our bodies to get the coveted bronze tan. But with a lot of education, sun protection, and clothing, has become so much more important and fashionable.
A whopping fifty million people are treated annually for skin cancer. On average children get three times more sun exposure than adults so it’s very important to protect our families. This is why when we came across the brand Mott50, we absolutely fell in love with the variety, coverage and awesome prints. Getting to match our minis was an added bonus! From traditional swim styles like bikinis and one-pieces to swim dresses, swim leggings, rash guard style and collaborations that add everything from ruffles to collars. The whole line has UPF 50 coverage so not only are you going to protect your skin but you’l look fabulous doing so!
Getting sunburn can put a damper on anyone’s pool party. Whether you are headed to the backyard pool or the pool hotel on vacation, it can be fun to get matching family swimsuits. Snapper Rock has that same amazing UPF 50 in their swimsuits and rash guards. We especially love their rash guard tops because it means that we only have to apply sunblock to a smaller amount of skin. And if you are following the bans on sunblocks because of the toxic chemicals, these suits not only help block the harmful sun, but also help protect the environment.
Just because you go to a pool party doesn’t mean you want to get wet! Coolibar is a great option whether you are hanging out poolside or need a cover-up as you transition to-and-from the water festivities. From dresses and shirts to hats, they make a wide range of clothing with UPF 50. One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in the course of a lifetime — there is a 300% increase in skin cancer incidences over the past 40 years! Coolibar also has so many great options for an active lifestyle. This is especially huge in San Diego, where we are based. From golf, to tennis, biking or walking, their outfits are sure to keep you safe while still keeping you on point with your favorite sport.
Protecting your children’s eyes is just as important as protecting their skin. Even if it seems overcast and cool out, it is just as critical to wear sunglasses on those days as the sunny ones. We love Babiators sunglasses because not only do they come in several stylish pairs, but they have specific sizes for infants, toddlers and older kids. They also have an amazing guarantee that if the sunglasses are broken or lost within one year of purchase they will replace them. Because we all know what it is like to have lost or broken a pair of sunglasses.
Summer time is all about letting your hair down and having fun in the sun. If your kids are headed to the pool or beach Appaman has some fun and funky options for them. From beach coverups to shorts and button up shirts, your budding fashionistas will be cool even in the warm sun. We love their bright and playful prints and our kids love mixing and matching things. From hamburger button up shirts and t-shirts with popsicles to chambray blazers and coordinating bow ties and pocket squares, we love that Appaman has so many unique looks for casual activities to special events.
Fun even when the sun goes down! Some of my favorite memories growing up were swimming the pool after dark. These glow-in the dark games by Starlux Games will keep the kids occupied in the pool for hours. There are 12 games from Sharks and Minnows, to a treasure hunt within the set. We love it because the kids are doing something physical instead of sitting in front of the TV or screen. They are also great to develop teamwork or unique party idea.
We’ve been sharing a lot about sun safety and protecting your skin, but water safety is so very important! When you have a backyard full of kids, or family scattered in the waves at the beach, it’s all too easy for an accident to occur. Drowning is the leading cause of death for 1-4 year olds. More than half of all drownings within that child age group are pool related. Experts estimate that instillation of pool or hot tub fencing could prevent as much as 90% of pool related drownings. Our boys are taking swim lessons through the local YMCA and we’ve seen a huge improvement when it comes to confidence around water, let alone actual skill.
A couple tips to keep in mind: Always designate a “water watcher” — this person is keeping an eye on the pool, or hot tub at all times when kids are present. Get in the water with your kids! They love the quality time and it helps you keep a hand close by should they need it. Enroll in a safety class or swim lessons through the YMCA. You can learn more at https://www.ymca.org/
