We have all been there, it is the week before Mother’s Day and we are trying to figure out what to get our mom. While it is easy just to grab a bouquet of flowers and call it a day, it is nice to give something personal and meaningful to the person that has been through it all with you. From poopy diapers to high school drama, she has cried with you, laughed with you and given sound advice even when you didn’t want to hear it. But it is also very easy to pick out some presents and start breaking the bank. We offer some tips on how to give a gift to mom to show your appreciation without breaking the bank.

5 Gift Ideas for Mother’s Day Under $50
- Get her a bag or purse of her own! Let’s face it whether it is a diaper bag, backpack or sports bag, mom is always carrying a bag for someone else. Make it a date and let her pick out a bag as her gift. We like giving a “gift certificate,” that way the recipient doesn’t pick out the latest Louis Vuitton leaving us with a huge credit card bill. We love the bags from Krafy Chix. They have a variety of bags that can be taken out for a night on the town and others that can be taken to the beach or pool. The fun part is that you can personalize it for mom with her initials.
- Let her spruce up her space. There is just something about home décor that makes moms feel happy. Often moms sacrifice buying something like décor for themselves to make sure the family has what they need. Ask your mom if there is something she has had her eye on. Maybe it’s a special vase or piece of art. French Studio Imports has some unique pieces that are sure to please mom including pillows, reusables napkins, aprons, and more.
- Pick out a piece of jewelry and write your mom a special note. It doesn’t have to be a new diamond ring. It can be a necklace, bracelet or even a vintage treasure. Find a poem or quote that captures the essence of your mom and the piece of jewelry. We like the “Glimmer” necklace from Erin Pelicano because our mom reminded us to “shine” every day before leaving for school.
- Find a book that she will love and give her a gift certificate to read it. I have lots of books on my shelf that I would love to read, but my current reading list includes “Goodnight Moon,” and Dr. Seuss. This can be a treat especially for a new mom. Offer to babysit or do chores so that she can have some time to herself to read. We like Jill Simonian’s “The Fab Mom’s Guide: How to Get Over the Bump and Bounce Back After Baby.” Jill talks about how Eva Mendes made her more respectful of pregnancy when she wasn’t feelin’ it and was resenting her pregnancy and how Matt Damon helped her face and cope with baby separation anxiety — traveling to NYC was the first time she left her baby overnight at 4 months.
- Fill a bag up with mom’s favorites. Whether it is nail polish, her favorite shampoo or a gift certificate to her favorite spot. Surprise her with a bunch of her favorite things. There are even bags like this one from Bow & Drape that can be personalized with patches and other décor. This can be fun for young girls to do as a gift for mom.
