Get This Baby Out!

Getting ready to leave the hospital

Like any mom at the end of her pregnancy, I was ready to get the baby out! At my 38 and 39 week appointments, I was only 1 cm dialated and the doctor said that the head while it was pointed down was not very far down. I didn’t want to be induced so I started doing all the things they say to do to naturally get the ball rolling. From eating spicy foods to going on walks, baby’s due date was approaching and there were no signs of contractions. I had to ask several of my friends what contractions felt like because I had to be induced with my son and didn’t experience anything leading up to being induced.

On Saturday, we decided to go to the Fall Fest with our extended family. We walked around and watched the kids ride the carnival rides and play games and enjoyed the live music. Around 1am I started to have some indigestion. I just thought it was due to the combination of tacos and ice cream. But then I realized that those were probably the start of contractions. I laid in bed most of the night. I couldn’t fall asleep so I began researching when I should go to the hospital based on intensity of contractions, what to do if your water doesn’t break, etc. By 4am, I decided I better order groceries for the week for our son and grandparents that were going to watch him.

At 7am, I called my mother-in-law to ask what her schedule was for the day and if she could watch our son. I said I don’t know if the baby is coming today, but I think I am having contractions. At 7:30, I woke my husband up saying, “I think the baby is coming.” He rolled over wanting to sleep some more and said, “Your water hasn’t broken yet. We have a couple more hours.” So I continued to “nest” by tidying up the house. When my mother-in-law arrived at 8:30, the contractions were getting closer together, but I still didn’t think anything of it since I was able to talk through them. Many of the articles I looked at said the pain will be so intense that you won’t be able to talk. I started yelling at my husband that we needed to leave. The pain was getting to be too much for me.

We Almost Had Our Baby at Starbucks

By 9AM my husband had taken a relaxing shower and did a load of laundry. He tried to get me to take a shower to relax going back to “your water hasn’t broken, you have a couple hours still. By the time I was loaded into the car my contractions were making me keel over. When we both sat down in the car, he turned to me and said, “Do you have my wallet?” I said, “No! We have had weeks to prepare and have everything by the door. We need to go.” He ran back in and found his wallet. As we drove by our local Starbucks. My husband said, “You must be hungry. We should stop and get something to eat before we go.” I knew that he was starving but I said, “I am not having my baby in Starbucks! We have to go.”

Baby Sophia Arrives

Thankfully the hospital is less than 15 minutes from our house. We made it to the hospital around 9:15 and Sophia made her entrance at 10:53AM. This past Sunday, as my husband went to get our Starbucks, I said, “Thank you for not stopping even though you were hungry last week. We might have had our baby in the Starbucks.”

We’re looking forward to sharing more of our Family Entourage adventures with you!
