“I have a lot of mentors; my brother is one, my husband… my mom, who is here [at the Dollywood premiere], but also a lot of trust in myself. I want to make sure I’m not needing outside validation, that I can really trust myself. So I’ve been doing a lot of inner work recently.”

Julianne Hough

Joined by her mom at Dollywood for the red carpet premiere of y Parton’s Heartstrings we caught up with Julianne Hough. At 18 years old she came onto the scene excited and ready to take on the world. Hough said it wasn’t until about 21 years of age that she started to hear doubts, whether they were her own or others saying “you’re not good enough.”

A decade later, now 31 years old and a seasoned veteran, she takes on the title role of Jolene in the mini-movie of Dolly Parton’s hit song “Jolene.” She stars alongside Parton and as we talk about the courage to step into a career she shares, “it’s scary to leave behind what feels comfortable, even if what feels comfortable is suffering.”

You can catch Hough in Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings, streaming on Netflix, November 22.
